試験もあと一息で終わり、待ちに待った夏休みがやってきますね。

皆さんは長い夏休みをどのように過ごす予定ですか？

ＩＣＣでは９月入学生を歓迎する「ウェルカム・フェスタ」と、

インターナショナル・スチューデント（以下ＩＳ）を歓迎する「ジャパニ

ーズ・フェスタ」のイベントを一緒に創り上げてくれるサポーターを募集します。

早稲田に新しく来たＩＳを含む新入生が、よりスムーズに早稲田での

生活に馴染めるよう、お役立ち情報をシェアしたり、日本の慣習

や文化を楽しんでもらうためのイベントです。サポーターには、

９月上旬からＩＣＣに集まって、イベント開催準備にかかわってもらいます。

この夏、後輩や新入ＩＳを歓迎するイベントを一緒に創り上げていきませんか？

◆ウェルカム・フェスタ

Hello everyone !



I would like to invite you to a special French Hour on August 18th.
Practice French while having some fun!

Maximum participants: 5 or 6 people


Language skill required: being able to make a simple sentence in French.


Time: 2 hours

This activity will require pre-registration for organizational purposes.
With your pre-registration, please specify any movies you liked recently.
There is no limit on the number of movies you can mention but if there
are a lot, please just mention the kind of movies you like.

I hope you will have a good time speaking French and learning how to play
a role-playing game. No, no, no, it is not about bringing your Nintendo DS
and playing Dragon quest in French. A role-playing game is a cooperative
game where everyone together builds a story. One of the players
will be the narrator. The narrator (played by me) needs to imagine the main
lines of a story, and also describe the fictional world where the characters
evolve. The other players are in charge of one fictional character with
strengths and weaknesses (the character can not be a player). The narrator
will describe some scenes with challenges, and have dialogues with other
characters of the world. The players will interact with the world and try
to find clues. The players and the narrator cannot always succeed in what
they attempt, and when there is a risk of failure in the chosen action, we
use a random element to determine whether it is a success or a failure.
The chance of failure is part of the fun.

The winner of such a game is anyone who can have fun enjoying the story
created during the session. So, everyone can win!

The story can be about anything and any kind of world (present times, realistic,
dramatic or fantastic- our past, a near future, a fantasy world with magic and
dragons, the samurai era, science fiction, anything). We just decide at the
beginning in which setting we want to start the story.

Don’t be afraid to join! It’s simple and fun! Most of the work is done
by me (the narrator).

Here are some more details about role-playing games:


If you’re not familiar with role playing, the idea is unbelievably simple:

You take on the persona of a character and interact with other
player-characters (or PC’s), also portrayed by real people. The PC’s undertake
missions, where they acquire experience to improve their capabilities,
and may additionally gain wealth, knowledge, or fame. The story is directed
by one player who is called the Narrator. The Narrator describes the
environment, handles any creatures or other menaces that threaten the PC’s,
and referees (judges) the rules that determine how various events turn out.

Role playing is a form of improvisational storytelling with every player
helping to tell the story. It is like acting in a movie that has no script,
with everyone at the table making up the scenes and the dialogue as the drama
unfolds – and there is an unlimited budget for special effects! It is not a
sequence of events that inevitably and inexorably lead to some predefined end.
Rather, every moment of the game is creates a new future storyline, shaped
by the actions of the players. Unlike a movie where the end credits must
roll and a sequel might be years away, the next installment of your story
will happen at your next gaming session.
