eg.2) Rotate the language each session

b) Respect your partner’s cultural background and unique way of thinking. Remember that the Language and Cultural Exchange Program is not just for learning language, but also for finding out more about different cultures.

c) Please consult with the Language and Cultural Exchange Program Coordinator at the ICC if you have any issues during the course of the program.

8. Q&A

Q1. How do you match applicants?

A1. Applicants will be matched by a “condition matching” approach – applicants are matched according to their stated information/conditions (language interests and abilities, etc.). However, imbalance in the number of applicants of each registered language may lead to a matching where not all conditions are perfectly matched.

Q2. I started the language exchange with my partner, but it has become extremely difficult to continue because of my class workload, etc. Do I still need to submit a report, even though I’ve only met my partner a few times?

A2. Yes. All participants (regardless of how many times they met their partner) need to submit a report between July 20 and 31, 2010.

Group Research Project “Work Cup”

水曜日, 3月 3rd, 2010

Talal Khan,

Junior, School of International Liberal Studies

The ICC Work Cup was a great experience, one that I will definitely remember for a long, long time to come. The trip to Saitama was much more enjoyable than I’d initially expected it to be. On the other hand, it also equipped us with basic research methodology and served to level the playing field. With this combination of fun and learning, the trip perhaps set the tone for the entire project.

The major problems we faced related to group-work: scheduling team meetings was a major issue. Since all 5 members were almost never free in the same time slots. Therefore we finally decided to hold meetings with a quorum of 3 members each time, with the rest being updated online or via text messaging. A google group was also used as a portal to share, discuss and even debate ideas. As our research progressed, the group also served as a place to gather resources, so that each team member could then keep track of what the others in the group were working on. Another important issue, although seemingly trivial, was that none of the team members owned a Mac. This was one of the prime causes of the unfortunate delay in the submission of our final video. I earnestly apologise once again for the delay.

Moving on, in terms of team work the project was a very enriching experience. As we talked about issues related to our topic, discussion often changed track and it was always interesting to listen to each others’ outlooks on life. Another major learning point was the data that we learnt during research. Our research helped us realize the fact that a lot of information shared with us on the global media is highly politicized. On the other hand, we realized that remaining bipartisan and presenting research findings without personal opinions is not an easy task. We hope we succeeded at that front.

All in all, the ICC Work Cup was subarashi. It felt interesting on day 1, and my personal attachment only grew from then on. Warm thanks to the ICC staff and student staff leaders for making this experience as enjoyable as it was!

Group Research Project “Work Cup”

水曜日, 3月 3rd, 2010

Chiao-Fang Cheng,

Freshman, School of International Liberal Studies

The whole work cup experience was the most meaningful and memorable thing to me this semester. I have learned a lot from the research project itself but also my teammates and other members of the work cup.

I think there were two main reasons why my group could finish the project successfully. First of all, our perfect team-work. All five members were really dedicating to the project. We all devoted lots of time and efforts in it. We met once a week from 900~1200 at the beginning of the project to discuss about our research topic. We change the topic couple of time until we thought its realizable and practical. We met three times a week after midterm presentation to research and write video script. At the last two weeks we met everyday from 1800~2300 until the guard kicked us out for our video shooting. Each one of us would try our best to attend every meeting. We all had skipped a couple of classes for interviews or presentations. We did not have really clear division of work .People volunteered to do or took charge the things that they thought they were good at or were able to do . Everybody wants to do something so there were no such problems of lacking organization.

Second, we listen everybody’s opinions. In every meeting, each member had to present there own ideas and opinions. After that, we discussed about the possibility of merging some of the proposals. The final decision would be make only after all the members agree to it

We had conflicts and we fought a lot at the beginning. At first, I was really frustrated when my proposal was being denied. Since we all have very different culture backgrounds, its hard to deal with different opinions and reach consensus on the topics. But after few discussions and communication, we learned how to listen and appreciate each other’s thoughts. We would take the advantages from every idea, and put it all together to make the perfect conclusion. Our project became better and better and our relationship became closer and closer.

I really learned a lot from the work cup project. Before, I was really bad at technical equipment. Now I know how to use the video camera, how to make survey through the internet, how to use computer to edit movie. The media class provided by Apple was also useful. I learned from my teammates how to make presentation. Elaborate handout, eloquently speech are all the elements of a successful presentation. I learned from the online survive that rather than interview people one by one , it is more efficient and easy to get large number of results by internet-survey. The chance to interview a lot of people especially Yoshida san, let me know the knack and manner of interviewing people. Among all the things that I learned, the most important things that I acquired was how to communicate with people from different background. My team might have the most diverse members among seven teams. We have people from three different countries and the age gap from 19 yeas old of freshmen to 38 years old of graduate school student. It’s really amazing that we can work with each other perfectly. At the end we understand each other very well and become very good friends.

We were joking all the time that we had join the “Slavery camp” which we work for a long time without any payment. But I truly believed that all the time and effort that I devoted to this project were worth it. At the beginning, I was actually worried about our project because we spend most of the time doing the research which is not show directly on the video. But because all the effort we make, and all the crazy night we spent together, we did create the best project ever!!
