ICC & WAVOC Talk Session / Do No Harm: How disaster relief can hurt economic recovery -Stories from Tohoku and around the world-

木曜日, 9月 20th, 2012

Date & Time: Oct. 26 (Fri) 4:30-6:00pm
Venue: 1st Fl, Okuma Garden House (Bldg. 25)
Eligibility: Waseda students, faculty, staff, and the general public
Registration: Not required
Fee: Free
Language: English

Randy Martin arrived in Tohoku within a few days of the Great East Japan

Earthquake. His mission: to look at how the disaster had impacted markets and

to work with local partners to devise a relief strategy that would support

economic recovery.

Mr. Martin is Director for Global Emergency Operations at Mercy Corps, a US and

British-based NGO specialized in international humanitarian relief and development.

Working through a decade-long partnership with Peace Winds Japan, and later with

Planet Finance Japan and the Kesennuma Shinkin Bank, Mercy Corps has applied its

global disaster response experience to community-led, market-driven programs in

Tohoku.

Mr. Martin will visit the ICC to describe how disaster relief can undermine economic

recovery―and talk about a number of approaches which help to address this problem

in Tohoku, and elsewhere around the world.

Additionally, Mr. Martin will talk about what it’s like to work at an NGO and

provide useful insights for those interested in pursuing careers with internationally

active NGO’s.

                Speaker Profile

Randy Martin has been engaged in international work for over

25 years, responding to relief and development challenges

in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Since joining Mercy Corps

in 2003, Mr. Martin has served as Director of Global

Emergency Operations, coordinating the agency’s response

to numerous natural and man-made disasters including earthquakes

in Iran, Peru, China and Haiti; cyclones in Pakistan, Myanmar

and Honduras, and complex emergencies in Darfur, DR Congo,

Kenya and Gaza―among many others. Mr. Martin is now

Mercy Corps’ Director for Partnership Development for East Asia,

based in Tokyo, where he continues to work on relief and

development programming through partnerships with Japanese

and other East Asian organizations. Building on their experience

together in Tohoku, he has just completed a joint assessment with

Peace Winds Japan for drought recovery programming in Niger.

Eating Together

First of all, while you eat with your language exchange partner, you get to learn the names of seasoning, ingredients, food, vegetables, and so on in each other’s languages. In addition, compared to having a rather serious conversation in the ICC lounge, eating elsewhere (in a restaurant or eating a bento somewhere on campus) is relatively less stressful. This will in turn make you both become friends faster. Moreover, normally when people speak a foreign language, they think too much and hesitate when replying because they are afraid to make mistakes. However, if you are relaxed enough or if you are close enough friends, you can say something right off your chest without worrying too much. Then your partner/friend will be able to correct your mistakes and make you improve faster.

Human Dictionary

This kind of dictionary is better than any other dictionary in the whole world. For example, when you are outside and without a dictionary, you can call/text your exchange partner instantly to get the answer to your language question right away. In fact, sometimes even when you have an electronic dictionary or internet with you, the definition may be ambiguous. This is when your partner comes into play; call them right away and get your questions cleared. Ask them to put the new vocabulary/phrase in a sentence/context, or even better you can ask them what the difference is between this new word and another similar word that you know!

Party

Come on, let’s be honest! We are all college students, and we all love partying. Throw away all the books and grammar for a while and get to know you partner more through extracurricular events. I had a nabe party with my partner, and I even went to a goukon once with him. Through these events, you can, not only know another side of your partner, but you can also make more friends through your partner. You know, the power of connection―friends of friends are your friends also. Soon you will make so many Japanese/foreign friends that you can ask for different opinions on a language/cultural question. Personally, I became really close (or somewhat) with all the friends that my partner introduced me to that we even went on a 3-day-2-night snowboarding trip together.

These are just a few of the experiences you can have through the ICC’s Language and Cultural Exchange, so I really recommend you to sign up. Registration doesn’t take long and this program can really have an impact on your student life!
